Every time someone tells me, “Tourism will develop naturally,” I smile… politely. Because tourism doesn’t “develop naturally.” Palm trees don’t magically build airports. Culture doesn’t pave roads. And vibes don’t write policy. Tourism grows where intentional people make intentional choices. And in Africa especially Nigeria we are long overdue for intentional design.
Tourism doesn’t happen. It’s planned.
When Dubai said “we want to be a global hub,” they didn’t pray for tourists. They built infrastructure, aviation agreements, free zones… AND a narrative. When Kigali said “we want high-value tourism,” they didn’t host carnivals. They built order, gorilla permits, investor incentives… AND consistent messaging. Tourism = infrastructure + policy + storytelling + partnerships. In that order.
Nigeria’s Tourism Equation (if we choose to get serious)
We have:
- culture that trends effortlessly
- a diaspora that feels like a global family
- music that moves continents
- food with personality
- and hospitality that cannot be taught
What we need is:
- visa clarity
- aviation strategy
- state-level destination development
- investment pathways
- and governance that doesn’t change every 10 minutes
Tourism doesn’t respond to talent. It responds to systems.
Final Word
If we want prosperity, we must design for it. And if we want tourism to carry Nigeria’s economic future, then we must stop treating it like decoration and start treating it like development.
